Among the vast leafless tree and shrub forms growing within garden beds and native woodland, witch hazel family members dare to stand out and be noticed. The season extends further into December and even crossing into the New Year, with blooms held on zig-zag stems in the early weeks of January. The boldest of them cracking bud in early to mid-January, the native species H. Several members of the witch hazel family, Hamamelidaceae, prefer to flower during the shoulder-seasons, late winter-early spring and late fall-early winter.
