In order to protect your generator and house when the grid unexpectedly comes back online, shut the main disconnect in the panel.ī-The breaker for the circuit which feeds the receptacle you are plugging the generator into must be ON. Obviously you must ensure that Ī-THE GRID MUST BE DOWN!!!!! This is first and foremost. Boom, you are backfeeding through the panel into the house from that one outlet. When power goes down, plug one end into the generator, one end into ANY common 15-20a receptacle, and start the generator. ![]() Buy a 50' length of 10-3 extension cord, cut the female end off of it and install a male cord cap (so you have a cord with two male ends you see?). What we used to do during hurricanes in Florida was buy a basic generator, 7500W or better depending on what you want to power up (coffee makers take a surprising amount of wattage). If he is willing to manually start it, why bother going with the fixed generator on a slab? He basically wants something that he can manually switch and start during a power outage. I've recommended the "standby generator" that automatically turns on (I've done the wiring for those as well), but these setups are rather expensive so he turned it down. I don't know how the inner city limit rules are. I've done this a few times before, but outside of city limits only. My initial thought was to cut the power off (Reliant will pull the fuse) and install a transfer switch directly next to the meter can.
